Roaring waves that sound like white noise
The trees glowing behind you as you look forward into the sunset
A dog smiling on his favourite trail
The curl of a fiddlehead in the spring
The pink cherry blossoms gathering by the curbs as you ride your bike up that hill
The sound of a text arriving from an old friend asking you the name of that boy she kissed in the summer before university
That maybe it was me that asked and not you because you remember everything
The friend who tells you that the whole car ride is a cone of silence
And you say of course- like always - and forever - and you fucking mean it more than your marriage vows
The bonds that are sacred
The stories that women share
The ones that go over the legal cases and then corroborate with the experiences of their youth
I love it when we hit the patriarchy button again and again and again
After throwing our hands in the air
The way we believe we actually could solve all the problems if we just had a better system for involving women who are too fucking busy taking care of everything
And yes I mean everything
That your book club might start learning guitar and it scares you more than singing happy birthday off key
When you find a book you can’t put down so you close the door on the bathroom and tolerate wrinkled fingers just to finish it
That feeling of looking back at the size of their bodies that once fit into your armpit and snuggled as tight as humanly possible
Holding up the gravity pulling down for so many years on this incredible planet
Wishing it pulled less on your skin and breasts
I love it when they ask for the keys like in that Cat Steven’s song you once sang them
I love it when they hang a wet towel on a hook
And blush when you mention their crushes name
It’s just one life here
One time around
No one tells you about the middle part
The transition
The gooey part
The part that is sticky and heavy
I love that there is always time to dive in, go under, go down, go back, look around
Unfurl
Love this reflection. The middle part is the most interesting AND challenging (so far!)
